Artist’s Statement

A lucid memory of pure being and perception has remained with me since I was three months old when, as though a light switch flicked on, I “awoke” to comprehend myself in full and total awareness of my presence in the world. My first sense of that awakening was one of texture, form, pattern . . . and a magical symphony of fluid colors that resonated with such force of intensity that it embedded itself in the deep core of my psyche.

What this elemental vision showed me is that form and color stand at the center of our human experience of the world, at the very core of human consciousness, and perception. Color and form are symbolic language universally expressed. Through the marriage of color and form I look to express those elemental ways of being and perceiving that we all once held.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up,” said Picasso. In my work, I attempt to capture the creative impulses of the natural mind before it gives way to exclusively adult modes of perception. My creative threads fuse the simple forms that a young child conceives and combine that with the technical mastery that maturity brings: in the words of William Blake “to recreate the riches of both Innocence and Experience”

In fusing whimsical shapes, lines and vibrant colors, I work to create a collaboration of the generations, I aim to convey essential human experiences and essential human stories, in such a way that all generations can recognize.
